Dr. Luis Mariano Palena

Biography

Dr. Mariano Palena is currently a Consultant Vascular Interventional Radiologist and expert in CLI revascularization and research. He is the co-founder of the Critical Limb Ischemia Courses (CLIC), Associate Professor of Angiology and Vascular Surgery at UNAM, and an honorary member of the SSVIR.
He obtained his medical degree from Bologna University in 2005. Dr. Palena has written and published more than 50 original research papers, review articles, and book chapters. Among his key scientific contributions are descriptions of advanced and extreme techniques for revascularization of lower extremity vessels (leg and foot), developed for the first time by his working group. He is actively engaged in endovascular treatment of lower limb arterial disease and diabetic foot syndrome, with a specific interest in chronic arterial occlusions, femoral, tibial, and retrograde/combined revascularization approaches

Dr. Naser Bader Naser Alhumaidi

Biography

Dr. Naser Bader Naser Alhumaidi is a Consultant General Surgeon and holds the designation Head, Diabetic Foot Unit, Farwaniya Hospital, Kuwait. He is also President, Diabetic Foot and Wound Association of Kuwait (DWAK). Limb salvage is his main professional focus, with the goal of preserving limbs and reducing the impact of diabetic foot disease.
He earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (M.B.B.Ch.) from October 6 University, Egypt, in December 2002 and holds the Kuwait Board of General Surgery, awarded in 2012. He completed a Diabetic Foot Fellowship at Complutense University of Madrid, Spain, from June 2017 to May 2018.
His fellowship training covered vascular and neurological complications of diabetes, diabetic foot assessment, wound classification and prognosis, and the diagnosis and treatment of bone and soft tissue infection. It also included prevention, risk classification, and comprehensive general, surgical and local wound management. These areas of training support his professional focus on limb salvage and the care of patients with diabetic foot disease.

Dr. Martin Maresch is enthusiastic Senior Consultant Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon in BDF Hospital, Bahrain. He is also Senior Lecturer in Faculty of Medicine, Royal College of Surgeon in Ireland, Bahrain.
He completed his graduation from Commenius University School of Medicine, Slovak Rep in 1996. He was trained in the Institute of Cardio-Vascular Diseases in Bratislava, Slovak Republic.
He accomplished PhD in Vascular Surgery with thesis title: Proteolytic enzymes in Pathophysiology of Aortic Aneurysm.
In his professional career, he has extensively focused work on Diabetic foot and CLI limb revascularization endovascular, open and hybrid techniques and limb salvage.
Beside routine vascular trauma cases, aortic and carotid procedures, managing AV access for patients on chronic dialysis he’s clinical interest is focused on Venous disorders.
After establishment of specialized Venous program managing acute DVT by medical treatment, catheter directed thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy as well as cases of Chronic DVT recanalizations by endovascular and hybrid techniques.
He is the author of multiple publications in international peer-reviewed journals, participant in several international trials and regular speaker on international cardio-vascular meetings.

Dr. Faisal Alam

Biography

Dr. Faisal Alam is a Senior Consultant Vascular Surgeon graduated from Sultan Qaboos University in 1994 with a BSc in Health Sciences and an MD in Medicine. He trained in General Surgery and obtained the MRCS in 1999. His higher surgical training was at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, United Kingdom. He obtained FRCS and CCT in 2007and in 2008 respectively.
On returning to Oman he was promoted to Consultant General and Vascular Surgeon at the Royal Hospital in 2009, and served as the Head of the General Surgery Department from 2012 to 2016. And currently serves as the head of vascular surgery department in the same hospital since 2021 and president of the Oman Vascular Society since 2023.
His vascular practice covers carotid disease, aortic and peripheral vascular disease, vascular access for haemodialysis, varicose veins and the diabetic foot, using both open surgical and endovascular techniques.
Dr. Alam is closely involved in surgical education. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Sultan Qaboos University medical college and served two consecutive terms on the Education Committee for General Surgical Training program at the Oman Medical Specialty Board. He remains an active faculty and trainer in the OMSB. He is an examiner for the MRCS Part B OSCE for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and served as the College’s International Surgical Advisor for 3years, and the Local Convener for the MRCS Part B OSCE examination in Muscat from 2014 up until 2024.

Prof. Mert Dumantepe

Biography

Dr. Mert Dumantepe is a Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at Uskudar University School of Medicine. He completed his graduation from Istanbul University School of Medicine, Turkey 2001. He was trained in Dr. Siyami Ersek Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Research and Training Hospital.
He did a fellowship in the field of Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension and Pulmonary Endarterectomy program and Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Assist Device program from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, USA in 2015 and 2016.
In his professional career, he has focused on extensive work with venous thromboembolic disease, particularly on catheter-directed treatments in deep venous thrombosis and intermediate-high risk Pulmonary Embolism. Dr. Dumantepe’s research interest is optimizing the therapeutic management of patients with massive pulmonary embolism and endovascular treatment of acute and chronic deep vein thrombosis.
He is a reviewer of the Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Chest, Heart-Lung and Circulation, BMJ, Phlebology, and the Lancet.
He is the author of over 100 publications in international peer-reviewed journals and a participant in several trials.

Dr. Koussayer completed his residency in General Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York and specialized in Vascular Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He further completed a fellowship in Endovascular Surgery under Dr. Edward B. Diethrich at the Arizona Heart Institute.
He has been certified by the American Board of Vascular Surgery since 2000 and has over 25 years of experience in all aspects of vascular and endovascular surgery. Dr. Koussayer is actively involved in research and has authored numerous publications. His main areas of interest include Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR), Thoracic Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (TEVAR), and both open and endovascular repairs of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms.

Dr. Soroush Sohrabi

Dr Soroush Sohrabi is a Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon at NMC Royal Hospital, Dubai Investments Park (DIP), with international training in the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States. He completed surgical training in England, gaining his Certificate of Completion of Training in Vascular and General Surgery and Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He undertook endovascular training at Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, and vascular and endovascular fellowships in Australia.
Previously, Dr Sohrabi served as Clinical Director of Vascular Surgery Services in North Wales, leading ten consultants across three hospitals and establishing centralised services for a population exceeding 700,000. He also held leadership roles in endovascular surgery, diabetic foot care and vascular access.
His clinical expertise encompasses aortic aneurysms, peripheral arterial disease, carotid disease, varicose veins, diabetic foot conditions and dialysis access, using open, minimally invasive and hybrid techniques. He introduced several advanced vascular procedures to North Wales.
Dr Sohrabi holds a PhD from the University of Sunderland and previously served as an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer at the University of Leeds. A recipient of the British Transplantation Society’s Medawar Medal, he has authored 77 peer-reviewed publications and four book chapters in his field.

Hassan Khan is a UK-trained sonographer with seven years of clinical experience in diagnostic ultrasound. He holds a Master of Science (MSc) qualification and specialises in complex vascular and musculoskeletal ultrasound. He has a particular interest in vascular and musculoskeletal imaging, with a focus on the assessment and diagnosis of complex vascular and rheumatological conditions. Hassan is actively involved in the dedicated teaching of ultrasound students and conveys lectures in different NHS hospitals within the UK aiming to help new sonography students bridge the gap between anatomy and real time practice. Dr. Tania Saez Guzman is a Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, Abu Dhabi, and Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor at Gulf Medical University. A Fellow of the European Board of Vascular Surgery, she has more than 20 years of experience across Europe and the Middle East.
At King Saud Medical City, Riyadh, she led the development of endovascular and hybrid treatments for aortic disease, chronic limb-threatening ischemia, and vascular trauma. She also served as Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program Training Director and a member of the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties’ National Committee.

Dr. Mohammed Raafat is a Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon with 20 years of experience. His areas of special interest include deep vein thrombosis (DVT) management, including thrombectomy, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), and stenting in both acute cases and chronic post-thrombotic conditions.
A key highlight of his career is his pioneering use of advanced catheters for blood clot dissolution, intravascular ultrasound, and branched grafts for patients with enlarged pelvic arteries in the UAE.
He is the Co-Founder of the Emirates Vascular Surgery Society (EVSS) and currently serves as the Head of the Scientific Committee. Dr. Raafat also serves on the advisory boards of several international endovascular equipment companies, contributing to the development and innovation of vascular surgery techniques and devices. Additionally, he is a member of the Higher Committee for Medical Liability in the field of vascular surgery.

She further honed her skills by obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Griffith University in Australia. Her clinical acumen is particularly focused on optimizing surgical pathways for vascular patients, including those with end-stage renal disease.
In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Zulaikha has been an active contributor to healthcare innovation. She initiated the first cancer registry at her hospital, a significant advancement in oncological research and patient management. She was also a pivotal member of a clinical task force that successfully reduced the waiting time for surgical interventions in cancer patients.
Zulaikha is deeply committed to the dissemination of knowledge and has presented her work on clinical pathways for surgical patients at multiple medical forums. Her academic contributions extend to being part of initiatives that aim to improve clinical protocols and patient outcomes.

He earned his M.B.Ch.B. from Al-Mustansiria University in Baghdad in 2001, later obtaining a Higher Diploma in General Surgery and certification from the Arab Board of Health Specialization (CABS). Specialized in advanced wound care and diabetic foot management, Dr. Haidar completed the International Interprofessional Wound Care Course (IIWCC) through Canada and established the Diabetic Foot Clinic at Dibba Hospital. Since 2016, he has served as a pivotal surgeon at Dibba Hospital, performing complex laparoscopic, bariatric, hernia, and general surgical procedures while leading diabetic foot and wound care care streams. He is also a certified instructor for the European Trauma Course (ETC) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) at the Training and Development Center in Sharjah.
